Certain car hire agreements abroad do not cover you for personal injury whilst driving their hire car. They assume your travel insurance will cover you for such circumstances. Ensure you are covered whilst driving a hire car in a foreign country by reading your own insurance and the insurance polices provided with the hire car.
Carry your insurance policy or at least your policy number or any contact details with you to show to any ambulance man should you have a serious accident. Often they will look for your travel insurance policy to decide which hospital to take you to. If they cannot find your insurance, they make take you to a state hospital, where the treatment may not be as good or as local.
You can still buy single trip travel insurance, often at prices well below what your local holiday agent would offer you. This can be very cost effective solution if you know you will only be travelling once this year. However if you intend travelling more than once, then you should compare an annual policy to two single policies.
